Q: A couple purchased a tablet worth RM4,500 for their child who is still studying. As the lifestyle tax relief is capped at a maximum of RM2,500, can the father claim lifestyle tax relief of RM2,500 for the purchase of this tablet, while the mother claims the remaining RM2,000?

A: No. Two different taxpayers are not allowed to claim tax relief for the same expense incurred. As the father has claimed tax relief of RM2,500 for the tablet, the mother is not eligible to claim the remaining RM2,000 for the same tablet anymore.
